Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul – Googoo Gaga
The lyric of “Googoo Gaga” reads like a shift schedule: feeding, carrying, crying, sleeping, cleaning up, repeat, with reflux and nappies thrown in. Charlotte Adigéry chants the chores over a rattling, low-end-heavy beat and shimmering synths, produced by Bolis Pupul with Soulwax’s David and Stephen Dewaele. Her delivery stays ironic and earnest at once, and an Italian shout of delight at a good meal cuts in as the one pure moment of joy.
Underneath the jokes sit guilt with no clear cause, a refusal to let fear do the steering, and the flat admission that the child will get bruised anyway. The duo wrote it as both became parents, and sum it up: “It takes a village, and yet you’re doing it alone.” Lennert Madou’s video restages De Mammelokker, a Ghent folk tale of a daughter secretly feeding her imprisoned father, with Adigéry in the role and an elderly white man as the father. It turns it into a question of who is expected to nourish whom. It’s their first release since “Topical Dancer” in 2022, out now on DEEWEE. A song about being worn out has no business sounding this alive.
